I've heard this term before.
Though, I don't know how valid it is. ~Tucker

Most 'American' show-bred Goldens are a pretty medium gold color. 'English Goldens' are a lighter gold color- almost cream and sometimes referred to as 'white goldens' (IE Oprah's dogs). Field bred goldens tend to be redder, but I'm not sure why.

You all are right . The show lines tend to get lighter .... but the field Goldens are darker . The original imported and show lines were darker than today ....Stilrovin lines , Lorelei lines . Google : Lorelei's Golden Rip Golden Retriever ....he was my 1st Golden's sire back in 1949 . A Champion all the way .... both Conformation and Field ....but wouldn't even been looked at in the ring today .!! Personally , I hate to see how the breed has changed ! My Grand-dog Seger is a beautiful Golden ..... just what the judges are looking for today . Bubba in my siggie looks much darker than he actually was .... he was the true honey colored Golden . More like Chip next to me on the swing .
