Unhappy My Father's Angel

The following post is a tribute to Ret, my dad's guardian angel and one and only heart dog.

Living in the country, every young boy had a dog. My dad got his when he was 10. A large, yellow lab who he named Ret. They went everywhere together, and this dog worshipped my dad. He would not let him out of his sight and the two were inseperable. When my father's mother would come in his room in the morning and scold him for a messy room, the dog would lie at the foot of his bed and growl if she came too close. When my brother got into fistfights the dog would snarl at the other boy and defend my dad. Every beat of this dogs heart was for my dad.

When Ret hit 6 (my dad was 16), his mother decided he wasn't taking good care of the dog and took him to get euthanized by the vet while my dad was at school. (This woman was mentally handicapped)

For a week, my dad got out from school and searched for his dog, calling for hours on end. He had lost his voice by the end of the week and would cry himself to sleep. As if a part of his heart was missing.

Finally, my nana took pity on my dad and told him that Ret was put to sleep.

My dad never got another dog until he married my mother.

THE BEST PLACE TO BURY A DOG

"There is one best place to bury a dog.
If you bury him in this spot, he will
come to you when you call - come to you
over the grim, dim frontier of death,
and down the well-remembered path,
and to your side again."

"And though you call a dozen living
dogs to heel, they shall not growl at
him, nor resent his coming,
for he belongs there."

"People may scoff at you, who see
no lightest blade of grass bent by his
footfall, who hear no whimper, people
who may never really have had a dog.
Smile at them, for you shall know
something that is hidden from them,
and which is well worth the knowing."

"The one best place to bury a good
dog is in the heart of his master."

--- Ben Hur Lampman ---

Ret, thank you. For protecting, loving, and teaching my dad everything he needed to know.

I am so sorry.

RIP

~Tucker

Thanks everyone. He doesn't really like to talk about it (), so I figured I'd do a tribute for him .
