Saje, that was a great post above where you listed what you fed. I've never noticed my guys having problems with egg shells not being ground up. I give them the whole egg, they crunch it down, and only with Daisy have I ever noticed shells in her stool.

savethebullies, like has already been mentioned, watch the organ meat. I wouldn't give it for at least 2 weeks and after that they only need an ounce or 2 a couple times a week. I found feeding even small amounts daily to Gunnar affected his stools in a bad way if you know what I mean.

My recommendation would be to use a single protein source for at least a week. If you don't want to feed chicken quarters or backs, try beef short ribs. Your guys should be able to eat those bones ok. You have to have some source of calcium, and I don't think the calcium from one egg shell is nearly enough when you consider the accepted ratio of raw meaty bones to muscle meat is 65/35. Granted not all of the weight of the RMB's is bone, but it's a fair percentage. Take a chicken leg quarter that weighs 1lb, if its the kind with the back connected, you are probably looking at 30***37; of the total weight being bone. Thats a lot of egg shells. I'd also make the veggies a minimum part of the meal. Maybe 10% at most. My guys don't get any veggies at all. To me they are nothing but filler. Unless you puree them, they can't really break them down easily. If you give the right proportions of meaty bones, muscle and organ meat, from a variety of sources, you shouldn't need any veggies.

agreed, wild canids only get the fruit and veggies found already partially digested in their preys stomach, green tripe is great for adding the vegies, or puree them first.

I wonder if other dogs think Cresties are members of some weird religious cult?

Oh mine will happily eat the shell dan it's just as a calcium source they don't absorb enough of it. BUT if you collect them (just give the egg for awhile) and dry them in the oven. Then grind them up you get a really nice calcium powder.
