Default No money for the Vet

My 3 year old rottweiler is in good health and regularly run 3 miles with me 2 - 4 times per week. The other day we were about to go running and I notice blood on his left rear paw. After seeing the blood I also notice he had a slight limp.

After closer examination his outer toenail seemed to be ripped and hanging by a thread or two. I did not take him running. The tonail came off a couple days later. I have some antibiotic ointment on the paw and also put alcohol on the paw on several diff days.

It has been abut 1 1/2 weeks since this began.

When the dog licks this paw he does it very, very gingerly.

Question is: I dont have $50 for the vet visit, not to mention whatever medicines that the vet prescribes.

I am still stumpped as to how this happened. The dog is in a fenced in yard.

Any sugguestions?

It takes nail wounds a long time to heal..and they are very tender. My Mary has nails that split easily if they get to long so i have to be very careful to keep them trimmed..they grow almost like a hollow cone on three nails, and if they get past the curved part the tip of the cone will catch and break back exposing the nerve. Just make sure it doesn't get infected, keep it clean and it will heal up on it's own. AFter that keep the nails trimmed up..i have clippers, some people use a dremel tool. either way.
also check with your local humane soceity and see if they have a not for profit vet clinic near you. I couldn't have my dogs if it wasn't for ours, the vet bills are greatly reduced.

The dog really needs to see a vet, cant you work something out with your vet? You dont know what the dog will step in and that could cause some major problems and health issues.

Just keep close tabs on it, checking to make sure the paw doesn't get infected. Keep him fairly well contained in the house and keep his trips outdoors as short as possible until he has nail covering the digit again.

Betadine is a very good anti-bacterial to use as it doesn't sting and it does an excellent job of keeping soreness down. If he will let you use spray bandage on the wound it will help cut down chances of infection when you're taking him out to do his necessary business.

That's really about all a vet can do, other than prescribe him some antibiotics, but if there's no infection and you keep it clean the antibiotics will do more harm than good.

Stupid is the most notoriously incurable and contagious disease known to mankind. If you find yourself in close proximity to someone infected with stupid, walk away as soon as said infection is noted.

i would take these suggestions watch it yourselof, it can heal or get more infected, it will go one way or the other, you should be able totell when its infected and for that have a backup plan. like any ones up top suggested
hope he gets better
