Default Dog eats everything

Have any of you encountered a dog with "basic" urine (instead of balanced, or acidic like it should be)? My vet and I have found tomatoe juice helps, but I would love to figure out the problem.

Have ya'll run a blood test? Sounds like it could be a kidney problem. I've never run into this problem myself but I'm pretty sure it's the kidney that controls the pH of the blood.
