Default A Sad Day

I went to the Petco in Duluth, Georgia today to pick up some food for Smokey and they had a no-kill shelter dog adoption set up in front of the store. There were maybe 15-20 cages of dogs and a few cats. Most of the dogs were barking and barking and it reminded me of the end of May when I went to a Shelter in Atlanta and found Smokey. At that time I saw the almost exact same scene as today , except that it was in the Atlanta PAWS shelter, rather than the front of a Petco.

Many of the dogs looked like they were trying to attract attention to themselves, by barking and junping around in the cages. There was a fox terrier sized dog and I went over to his cage, and he looked so excited that I was actually paying attention to him. There was a German Shepard in one of the cages and he was frantically trying to dig out the metal bottom of the cage trying in vain to escape. With all the ruckus he was creating, I was thinking that people would probably be pretty reluctant to adopt him. Each dog in each cage seemed to have it's own story and act out in a particular way. I realized that any one of these dogs are just like any of the dogs that many of us now have, they love to play, and cuddle, and get treats, and go for walks, but they can't do any of these things....Thinking about this, I felt really sorry for these dogs, because many of them will probably be in these same cages next week.

People go to pet stores and buy "pedigree dogs" for tons of money, and here these really nice dogs that need a home and would probably make great companions and loving pets for someone, just as Smokey has for me, are stuck in these small cages and may never get out.........

This part of my day today, was very sad.......

I know how you feel - I usually try to avoid Petsmart on dog adoption day. The last time I actually went to one is when I got Zuki, and I had no intention of it at the time, took my son in for some fish and came away with a puppy! But seeing all those dogs breaks my heart. When we were there they had an older GSD that I wish I could have adopted. She was barking frantically at everyone, and probaby scared everyone away from adopting her too. Only we already have a female GSD, and she doesn't like other female dogs, so I coudn't. I still think of her often and feel bad. Hope she got a good home. Next dog we get, I want to adopt a dog like that, one without a lot of chances. In the meantime, I avoid dog adoption day like the plague!

That's so sad.

I tend to avoid weekends at petstores because I just can't handle the adoption they have and allof those sad faces... I always want to help them all and I know that I can not.
