Does anyone know how you could make a clicker? I haven't found anywhere that sells them and I need to start training asap because I don't expect her to be perfect by the time school starts but I need a good base. I know I can order one but I would like to start this weekend.

You could just find something which makes a quick, distinctive sound...maybe a loud ball point pen. (?)
You can get them at Petsmart, Petco, online. Go to Karen Pryor's website. They're cheap....a couple bucks. |

You don't acutally need to use a clicker to follow the same "clicker" method. Just replace the clicking sound with one sound or word to signify a correct response. Like - "SIT"...CLICK (or say "YES")..reward.."GOOD SIT".
I "clicker" train deaf dogs using a flashlight to replace the click. You could replace the click with the sound of your hand smacking your leg, or click with your tongue, or a word, as above..YES.

Then there's always bubble gum. POP!
Yes, indeed, you can use a marker word. I use "Yessssss!" But I still love the very distinctive sound of a clicker. It's so different from our usual voice. But sometimes remembering to carry the clicker with you is a hassle so it's good to use another marker sound just in case. You can use a whistle and make one, quick whistle but I wouldn't use a loud one or one that's too scary sounding. LOL. |

I don't know how to whistle. I would use the gum but I get tired of that. They didn't have them at petsmart I looked and looked. I would get it from that website but it would take awhile to be delivered. I'll try clucking my tongue. Thanks guys, clicker training starts today. I bought the benifits of positive dog training today.

I mean a whistle that you wear around your neck on a string, not whistle yourself...if you can't. I was just joking about the bubble gum. It would be hard to regulate the timing just right. By the time you get it spread out over your tongue.....etc, etc. LOL. But yup...anything which is distinctive. Sounds like you'll have fun. Did you read through one of the websites about clicker training or do you have a book? At any rate, good luck! |
