Default Clicker Training

I don't understand, I have tried to look at some sights and I did a forum search but I don't get some things. Do you actually ever say the command? I can't tell from what I've read, all I see is the rewarding part? How are they going to know you want sit, won't they just sit all the time for a reward? Do you say the command, they do it then click and treat? Also can you click, and while giving the treat say good girl or something, that way they at least kind of associate good girl with the treat in case you don't have the clicker handy? Lastly where can I buy a clicker?

When first teaching the dog a command I don't actually start to say the command until AFTER I'm getting a reliable response from the lure.

So it would go like this.

Just starting out = Lure, dog does command, click, YES!, reward.

Dog is starting to understand what I expect = Say command, lure, dog does command, click, YES!, reward.

All of this is done really fast, the 'click, YES!, reward' takes less than three seconds. Gotta be quick so the dog associates the click/treat with the right behavior.

The YES! is my verbal reward marker. I want the dog to not only associate the click with a reward but my verbal YES! as well.

The 'lure' part of this is assuming you're luring to get a behavior and not shaping.

You can get a clicker at most pet stores.

Silverpawz is absolutely right but I do usually use the command right from the get go. It is (as silver said) not necessary but I find that people in my classes understand it easier and it doesn't hurt as long as your timing is good and you DO NOT repeat commands. You can say "Sit" as you lure him into a sit, then "Yes-Click" and Reward the second his butt hits the floor. Some pet stores sell clickers, I'd call you can't find any in your area, try or google "clickers training" and you'll find other places that carry them. is a great site to help you with clicker training, clicker books and everything CLICKER!! Good Luck!

I LOVE my new siggy Baxter'smybaby, THANK YOU SO're the BEST!!!!!!!
