I echo that !!! Having had pure bred Goldens for 60 years , my Ollie through pet finder is a perfect find ! Only problem , when I vetted him last week , they listed him as a Goldendoodle !!! Yes, he is a mix but all agree he's Golden/ Chessie !! The ad said poodle/retriever. Gotta change those records !!!

Madaline!
We have had lots of little dogs come into our shelter, and LOTS of them in rescue's!
If your sister is still looking, I can hook her up!
Please don't purchase a designer breed!

Now I dont know if this has been stated, im not done reading through the 11 pages, but here is my opinion:

Cockapoos can be great dogs. But because they are a mix you never know what look or temperment you will get. I had a cockapoo growing up he was my first dog and he was gorgeous with a Cocker Structure and the curly Poodle hair. That was way before the ridiculous designer dog fads and he cost us 75 dollars.

While he was incredibly gorgeous he inhereted the worst from both breeds, speaking temperment wise. He was snappy, loud, agressive, dominant, whatever you want to call him, that was him. I joke he was the devil in a dog suit, but he was wonderful to me, never once bit me or growled at me.

There are no responsible mix breeders. No responsible breeder, no matter how much health testing will breed mixed breeds. They are no trying to establish a new breed, they are just in it for the money (or some other crappy excuse) You can NOT establish a new breed on only two breeds, and most of these dogs are purebred X purebred crosses yuou rarely see Mix X Mix breedings. Sorry I must comment. The Cockapoo will always be a opular mix, it will never be a recognized breed, because at least the AKC (and im pretty sure the othe clubs too) doesnt recognize a mix of only two breeds as a new breed. Even though Cockapoos have been around forever a real standard still does not exist because even pups from the same litter vary greatly

not to mention...the fact that its been around since the 60's or 70's? Big whoop...alot of pure breeds have been around for centuries....not just a few measly decades...

Mixing breeds will not guarantee a standard because like LizzieCollie stated, the puppies might all be different from one another...there is no standard..nothing to conform to...

I cant believe people hate mutts! Mutts are usually the smartest dogs. They are usually alot healthier as well. I know so many purebred dogs that get cancers and all kinds of health problems as they can be inbred. I think all dogs are beautiful. We have just recently lost our kelpie cross. A purebreed kelpies life-span is about 10-13 years, our kelpie was 19! He was the smartest, healthiest and happiest Mutt in the world! I LOVE MUTTS!

People do NOT hate mutts, they hate the fact that people are taking advantage of them, and trying to breed and sell them for profit....

If you read the entire thread before you post (or even just skimmed it), you will find that this is not true. It has been stated numerous times on this thread that what people take issue with is irresponsible BREEDERS who use LIVES as nothing more than a money-making scheme. We feel *badly* for the animals- they're the ones who end up paying for the greed of the breeders. (And this goes for irresponsible breeders of PUREBRED dogs as well).

As annoying as it may be- I would suggest reading through a whole thread before you post, or at least be reasonably sure that your point has not already been addressed.

I'd be interested in seeing your statistics for this. Do you have a study that allows you to state this as fact?

And as far as mutts being healthier...well that generally depends on HOW you qualify the study, doesn't it? An F1 cross of Labrador and Poodle will more than likely be far LESS healthy than a purebred from a responsible breeder. Why? The majority of people breeding "Labradoodles" are not obtaining their breeding stock from responsible breeders doing genetic testing. I personally don't know a single (good) Poodle or Lab breeder that would seriously consider sending a nice, intact dog to someone who intended to cross-breed it. So, when this breeder ends up crossing two animals that have not had generations of genetic health-testing, and well thought-out breedings, the result is a dog that is now opened up to the genetic problems prevalent in BOTH breeds. Now problems that would've only popped up in Poodles, will show up in the Poodle/Lab cross. And the same goes for problems that would've only popped up in Labs.

What scientific studies have actually been done to prove mixes are healthier than purebreds? Most pure breeds have parent clubs that insist on a wide range of genetic tests for breeding stock. We KNOW what problems are likely to show up in our breeds. There isn't any sort of a registry keeping track of what is showing up in mixes. How many people are doing CERF, PennHIPP or OFA on their mixes?

When we're talking about mixes being healthier, we'd *really* have to be talking about virtual pariah dogs. Animals left to breed indiscriminately without the interference of people. NOT crosses purposely created by a breeder- there just isn't enough genetic variation.

Frankly, don't waste your time. Those people just don't get it, it's so much easier to just believe that we hate mutts that to see the big picture.

But can we let this thread die? Pleeeeeeeeeeeease?

LOL- agreed Fran. I should've figured after 11 pages of arguing that my post wasn't going to change the status quo.
