Question Medi-cal...

I'd like your opinions on this food. "It is one of the top brands recommended by vets, and one of the best premium foods" (so I was told)... A vet tech was trying to get me to buy it. I don't like that meat is not a first ingredient... What do you think of it? I scanned parts of the pamplet:

Thanks to all who reply.

I don't have the time to go into detail here, but you can compare the food point for point to this check list:

http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index....betterproducts

That should give you a pretty accurate evaluation.

As a side note, I would never feed a food with a protein content hat low to a normal, healthy dog without supplementing fresh meat, or at least grain-free canned food, on a daily basis.

The vet tech was trying to get you to buy it because they sell it in the vets office. Most vets (and techs) have very minimal nutritional education, and in this case, the tech was flat out wrong. It is not a premium food, it is not even a good quality food. It's better than most grocery store brands, but that's about all I'd give it.

Arg, I wish vets were more educated about pet food nutrition... Mordy, I'm gonna print out articles from your site and post it all over the friggen building! She even said Eagle pack was low quality and that I should be feeding Charlie this "better", "premium" food. She really made it sound like she knew what she was talking about, she wouldn't shut up. lol.

$10 says she didn't even know what Eagle Pack IS let alone be a judge of it's quality

I had a customer come in last week who'd had their cat on Nutro natural choice. After an illness, the vet had her put the cat on Hills. Not for a prescription, just because they claimed the hills was of superior quality to the Nutro. I had to do a side-by-side ingredients comparison for the customer so she could see that the vet actually didn't know what they were talking about in this circumstance. I ended up talking to her about Felidae and she's going to switch. Go figure.
