There have been many discussions about people feeding there dogs bad food like purina, pedigree, science diet, etc, but when I take a closer look at things it's so easy to understand this.
The vets all recomend science diet, so of course people think that there vet knows best. Then purina has treats and food all available at the grocery store and has these cute commercials. Then Pedigree, have you seen there commercial? I feed my dog innova, but that commercial is cute, I actually like seeing it on tv every time! The only time I ever see any advertising for Innova or the better quality foods is on signs outside some pets stores, and thats it. So no wonder why the general public feeds there dog these types of foods.

Advertising costs a lot of money, money that should go into what's in the bag, not on the bag and not on TV. Most premium brands know this and would rather produce a high quality product and not bother with mainstream advertising channels that will eat into product quality. On top of that, most people are lazy sheep when it comes to pet products. 'If all these people but Ol Roy, it must be good!' Whatever

That does make sence, but if they spent a bit of extra even on one commercial they would make a lot more money in the long run. It also would show that they cared about the animals in the community.
Without the internet I know I would have no idea of the difference between Innova and Purina. A little education goes a long way.

it cost a LOT of money to run even just one commercial... and these small-market companies just don't have the financial ability to do so.
they rely on the responsible pet owners who will take the time to research what they are feeding their dogs. but keep in mind, lots of dogs thrive on the pedigree/purina-types of dog foods... every dog's different. |

The foods that normal pet owners feed their dogs and the foods that crazy dog people feed their dogs will almost always be different.
Yes it's true that some dogs do OK on brands like Purina and Iams but a month or two on a better quality food and I'm sure you'd see some change... maybe with coat, or "smell". I imagine it's like everyone else said, it's expensive to run advertisements, and they would rather put that money into making a high quality food. |

It is a shame more people don't realize this. Until I came on here I had no idea what other superior products were available and where to get them. I switched to Innova a week ago--I thought my dogs were thriving and healthy looking before--but I can already see a difference---Innova is definitely good stuff...

Also, imo , the high quality brands and companies rely more on word of mouth than TV and glossy print ads in the Sunday paper.

Word of mouth is always going to be better advertising for getting a solid customer base. You can amp up any product you like through flashy commercials or slick ads, but you're still taking a chance in buying. This is why I ask around about just about everything and anything major I buy, be it pet food, a new car, a new hair care product...I don't like spending my money on so-so stuff.

Great thoughts discussed in this thread so far.
I'd have to add another one: If Natura actually advertised their products like the all too well known junk brands, what could they say in a short TV spot for example that would actually convince people that their products are superior to junk like Purina, Science Diet and Pedigree? It takes some research to understand the differences, and if someone cares enough about their dog's diet to do this research, they will find the good quality products.
