I think they may be more forgiving in the blues? I've never seen a tri or b-black with that much white doing very well ... but I don't pay that much attention these days either, so maybe things have changed. (I haven't worked with Sheltie people since the 1980s and back then, they were dying white body spots on their tris and bi-blacks).
And regarding ears, I've seen many Shelties ears that could be saved, but Collies ears are different. I haven't seen the same happy results with Collies. I think as a breed, Shelties have better ears than most Collies.
