Onions

I've heard that onions are bad for dogs. Is this true?

We used to give my golden retreiver onions all the time. My mother has given all of her dogs onions, too. My boys got onions on occassion (usually in soups and stews). None of them have ever suffered any ill effects. I have stopped giving onions since hearing about this, but I wonder how true it is.

From what I have read it is "dose dependant"

Onions contain thiosulphate, which is toxic in large and small amounts. I don't think a small piece would hurt but there isn't a need for onions in a dogs diet so I would rather opt out on giving it to them.

my understanding is raw onions are bad, but cooked onions are fine.

Even cooked and processed onions (e.g. onion powder) can lead to hemolytic anemia.
