Question Bull Mastiff owners

I need some advice. I have wanted a Bull Mastiff since I was in high school, but they are a little out of my price range. I have thought about rescuing one, but I am unsure if this is a good idea. My main concern with rescuing a Bull Mastiff is that most of the ones I have seen on the sites come from abusive situations or from puppy mills. I realy don't want to end up with a dog that is very aggressive or has poor health. What is going to be my best option. I do know a local breeder and he has told me that I would be better off knowing exactly what I was getting. What do you guys think?

In your situation, I would adopt an adult bullmastiff from a reputable rescue.

If you get an adult bullmastiff, you already know what it's temperament is like. And since rescues practice fostering, the foster family would be able to tell you all about your potential dog's temperament.

I personally would not get a rescue puppy. With puppies, you never know exactly what his or her adult temperament would be like. And since most rescue puppies come from backyard breeders and puppy mills, that's a bit more of a risk.

If you have your heart set on a puppy, then I would go with a reputable breeder.

But keep in mind: it does cost a lot of money to keep a dog like a bullmastiff. With any large dog, you have more expensive shots, surgeries, boarding fees, and of course they eat a lot more.

If you own your home, be careful. Many insurance companies can deny you coverage if you have a "high liability" breed, like a mastiff, GSD, rottie, chow, etc.

If you do go the rescue route, be VERY VERY VERY careful about knowing as much as you can about the background of the dog. I had a very bad experience with a rescue Bull last year that came to board and the owner herself had been increasingly more wary of her own dog as well.
