i always assisted the births..helped move the puppies out of the way when they were circling so they wouldn't crush one..let mom clean and all but was careful not to let her chew too far down on the umbilical..it happens sometimes they are so nervous and will bite right into the babie's tummy..Labs have big litters too usually between 8 to 14. Mom is tired towards the end so i make a cup of coffee for her. The stimulant gives them the extra push for those last pushes..i take the weaker ones and put them under the lights to help keep them warm during the birth process putting them back inbetween to get them to nurse..the stimulation helps bring on the next contraction. I make sure the thinner ones get the back nipples that are so full and larger nippled so it is easier for them to latch on..i rotate puppies. I give drinks of water, help wash mom up, and she always gets a huge piece of pizza when all is said and done..i make sure she isn't too hot, nor the puppies too cold. I am a good midwife and i never heard one of my Mom's complain! It was my job to help mom from labor to the selling of her pups. Ol Boss always let her keep one for extra time a few months and trained that one out and sold it as a good started dog.

We recently had a litter (our first) I was panicing if it would go alright, but Willow was a wonderful mum, the first pup she was a little surprised at (what the heck is this) but then she got into cleaning him and he went onto her teat straight away, only one pup was a bit slower going to the teat so I put her on. Willow cleaned the pups fed them, cleaned herself and everything, I was sat with her through the whole process, the only thing I did do was move pups out of the way when she was trying to give birth to the next pup, they were put into a box (in the welping box) next to Willow with a heat lamp on, to keep them warm as soon as the next pup was born they all went immediatly onto mum, during the welping I gave mum diluted puppy formula as a drink along with water, and after she was settled gave her some scrambled eggs, by the time the last pup was born I felt that I had been assisting in births all my life it was a wonderful experience, and although a little painful for mum, she loved being a mum once it was all over.

Nothing's better than a good whelping pen. Instead of wooden safety rails, we had pipes that we removed when the pups were large enough not to get pinned. I breed Bubba to a female once and the family promised to make a whelping pen. They then used a large wading pool and the Mom rolled on and killed 2 beautiful pups. Lord, I was mad and sad !
