Default Trick of the week: Leg weaves!

This week's trick is leg weaves! Huge variety for you with this one.

Forward leg weaves
Dog weaves through the handler's legs while the handler is walking forward.

Figure 8
Dog weaves a figure eight through stationary handler's legs.

Backward leg weaves
Dog backs through handler's legs while handler is moving backwards.

Backwards Figure 8
Dog backs a figure eight through stationary handler's legs.

You can add scoots before or after these, you can run, you can skip. Make those leg weaves fun!

Benefits? Great way to stretch your dog's back before performance sports, or to just warm up their entire body. Great for body awareness too, especially the backwards weaves.

Ready... set... go!

Yay! Stuff to work on! Actually, I had already started doing this with Summit back in the early winter... before we lost our work space at a local horse barn. Kili I can work with on the hardwood, but Summit needs good footing or he freaks.

This is where the big man was at:

The weaves are tough for us because of how tall he is/short I am. lol.

Kili knows how to go around and come between my legs and just stand between my legs. So we need to actually work on weaves tonight.

This video is from 2012, so it's pretty old. Here's Cohen's backwards weaves. I think she's improved a lot since then and is doing it fluently on verbal only. I'll hopefully record a video of where we're at now soon.

I'm not sure what I'll work on. I don't think we have a backwards figure-8 yet.

That's awesome. I'm thinking that would be fun for Kili. We'll start with forwards though... mostly because I have no idea how to train that backwards stuff. hee hee.

Does "darting through and under and around the human's feet snatching at shoelaces and making the human trip and stumble to avoid accidentally crushing him" count? Because if so, Lodin has this trick mastered already

Ok, so I wanted to test out making a video and since I never do anything with the Muffin... and I just read this thread... I figured what the heck and did this on a whim.

Next time I'll have the cheese cut up, my hair in a bun, and Keeda moved out the room so we don't have to be on top of the camera. HaHa. But this is my first video ever. And yes, I'm luring... Muffin and I both suck at shaping.

I've done some work with Mia but she is very wary of being underfoot. Probably for good reason because owner = clutz and dog = tiny.

She is figuring out that I won't stomp her during this though.

Here's what I've decided to work on: a backwards figure-8.

Here's a quickie video of where we're at with leg weaves. My basement is NOT BIG ENOUGH and it's frustrating but everything is covered with about 6 inches of ice outside.

Awesome! Love those backward figure 8's!

Kili picked up on this really quick. I have the same problem with her as Summit though... freaking tall, long dogs! Leg weaves are really awkward. lol. I think they'll smooth out as they get better at it. I'll get a video of Kili's progress today. I also taught her to shake last night. Such an easy trick. lol. But really I taught her because I want to teach her to wave.
