Who does it? How is it going? Are you tracking for AKC or IPO? Another venue? I'm going to start tracking again and because I have no trainer here nor support system I was hoping this thread could be a way of keeping track, sharing tips, learning, and experiences.
Also totally open to air scenting and sport detection or SAR. I myself will be focusing in IPO and maybe AKC. Thanks. !

I do!
I track Kastle in IPO and also train tracking dogs for work...which has specific needs that are different and unique to other tracking I know of. I was also in SAR and have handled and trained a trailing dog (that was for work), and trained my own Wilderness Air Scent dog... I LOVE scent work and scent pictures and how dogs interpret scent etc...I find it fascinating! ETA my TD gave me some excellent handling tips and I can see a HUGE difference both in Kastle and my work dogs. Natural talent is a lot of it, but handling can REALLY make a difference!

I'd love any handling tips!
Also videos are encouraged. ![]() We headed out at lunch and I did a short straight track with Sloan, she was super clean and efficient. I put food every step then every third and then every fifth, I let it age 10 minutes (my lunch is short and we haven't tracked for a year probably) and she didn't miss a beat, the grass varied from short cut to long to clover/moss. Maybe she's not forgotten this stuff after all.

I will be! The Megan loves the tracking and will be working with Siri, Frodo and I as soon as it's not cold as balls. Because I am not going outside at the buttcrack of dawn in this weather.
Frodo can compete in AKC, but as far as I know Siri will only be eligible for ASCA tracking. Which happens like, never. I wish there was another option! |

I track for IPO, obviously. Have two young dogs working right now. One is 1 1/2 and we're working on moving the emphasis from food on the track to the articles. The other is 7 months old and just working on footsteps.

no videos from me. I hate it
and certainly don't want to watch videos of it. I'm always by myself or if I am with others, we're talking too much and fooling around behind the dog to create distractions to try and hold a camera still enough to not drive someone nuts trying to watch it.As for handling tips? You always see the results of your last track in your current one and you're always laying a track to make the next one your best. Make sense? Other than that I think too many try and make it too complicated. |

I track IPO but am looking at trying for a TD as soon as Judge gets his articles back to where they need to be. He hates stopping on a track so his article indication turned into a very short stand and then moving on from them so we are retraining articles. LoLa loves tracking cause it involves food. I need to work her more.

At what point do you add articles and how do you train your alerts? This is for anyone interested in sharing, we were hitting long tracks with several turns and aged well in Vegas before we quit (it is so hard to find safe and appropriate ground to track on there) but we never did article so I'll be entering that blindly, I fear.
