Today's update: he went into his crate fine and quietly this morning, no problems, got cookies. (He also went in his crate last night just fine when I left to go to the gym.)
This afternoon I put him in and he had a mini-tantrum with some barking and spinning. It did stop pretty quickly but it was LOUD again. I tried to break the pattern a bit; Pepper went in her crate for a good 10 minutes before I was ready to leave. I guess I blew it because I tried to call Auggie at the same time and my dad had Auggie on his lap and was petting him and didn't want to let Auggie go... so when I was leaving I called "Auggie, come crate" and of course that tipped Payton off that DURR WE'RE GOING IN CRATES, so he got a little amped up again. I think if he's calm and quiet when he goes into the crate, he's calm and quiet IN the crate. But if he's excited when he goes into the crate, this is a problem. I was able to reward him for quieting down again pretty quickly, went to get my coat on, packed up my almonds to take back to work and grabbed my water bottles and he was still quiet, so he got another cookie and I went to the door and left and he was quiet. I am trying NOT to become anxious this means he's going to start building up his tantrums again and we'll be right back to where we started.
