And honestly, yeah, that's freakin' horrible, and obviously doesn't make any sense, but:
People throw their kids on the street because they're gay. People euthanize their dogs because they do things like bark and eat. People get rid of their dogs because they get new furniture and the dog doesn't match anymore. People kill other human beings for being gay. Why are people shocked by this? Why don't people freak out when people try to euthanize their dog for chasing a cat? Or for humping a person? Why don't people freak out when other people are murdered for their sexual preferences?

The freakout is partially folks marvelling at the level of idiocy that leads a person to believe a male dog humping another male dog is a sign of sexual orientation in the first place.
The bigoted reaction to that belief is, while even more appalling, somewhat less surprising.

I guarantee most of my friends/people on other sites freaking out about this have no idea that humping isn't a sexual behavior. They probably largely think, at least upon reading the headline, that the dog IS "gay". They're mad because they're either supposedly huge gay rights activists, or an "animal lover", probably some kind of PETA supporter, etc.
Why aren't the people who are mad about someone dumping their dog for a horrifically stupid reason mad about the 300 dogs sitting in our city ACC, mostly for reasons like "I didn't know I had to feed him" or "he chased the neighbor's cat" or "I want to go out with my friends all night and didn't know I couldn't leave him alone all weekend". Why aren't the people who are mad because it's a disgusting display of people's attitudes towards gays, mad about Uganda's laws? Mad about marriage equality not passing? Mad about the 15 year olds sleeping on someone's couch or on a park bench because their parents caught them with gay porn?

Can't answer for your friends as we clearly hang out with different people. Just relating the reactions to the story that I've seen.

I don't think anyone thinks the dog is gay. At least not anyone that I've seen post it. If your friends think the dog is gay, maybe you have stupid friends...

People do get mad about all of the stupid excuses that people give for abandoning their pets. I see it in my news feed all the time!

I don't know about you, but I can be mad about more than one thing at a time.
I also think it's a bit easier to shake your head at a specific target you actually know about - like the idiot who surrendered his dog for being gay - than all of the 300 people who dumped their dog in your city pound. |

You cannot control what people get upset about. I hear this all the time- like "why did everyone care so much about Jean Benet Ramesey and not the 10,000 African children who died this week"- because it wasn't publicized. Unfortunately, we have created a world in which people will blindly follow what the media says. This guy euthanizing his dog for being gay is a hot issue right now because gay rights are a very important issue right now. It doesn't matter to people that the behavior isn't sexualitied, it matters to them that this man is clearly so bigoted that he is willing to stop a life because he is so strongly against homosexuality. Personally, this sort of behavior does really scare me, because I really have to wonder- if he is willing to kill his dog because of this, will he (or has he) harmed or killed human beings for being gay?
You just have to remember that people react to things based on what is important to them, and based on what they know. Most people don't have the time or the drive to go out and find out what other stupid reasons dogs get killed. They react to what is in front of them, and I guarantee you this story is big because gay rights is big.

Honestly, you need to stop being angry at others for not being angry enough. My mom, for example, is not an angry person. You would never see her protesting, or writing a passionate letter to her congressman about an issue she feels is important. She is not dumb, and it's not like she doesn't care. She just doesn't feel that it is a good use of her time to be angry about anything. She gets tired of me ranting about stuff all the time, and honestly she is a lot happier than I am. She spends her energy educating people rather than being angry with them. YOU have control over what YOU care about.
