I don't know, some stuff in the story bugs me...
Family friend took the girl to the house, but the dog owner said she was asleep at the time (which I think explains the dog being shut in a room, I don't let my dogs wander freely while I'm sleeping either). So, was this a roommate who invited the child without the dog owner's knowledge?
Dad wasn't actually there and was 'told' what happened; makes me wonder if the account of the child just petting the dog is the complete truth.
Dog was locked in a room but 'got out'. How?
