I LOVE grits. In fact, I've got coffee percolating and grits cooking. I'm just doing a bit of spray butter (darn this diet junk), but cheese grits and grits with lots of butter are just plain deliciousness.

I do love visiting the Southern states and the whole southern hospitality is nice... BUT....

Southerners don't move quickly for anything lol.

About the only thing I've noticed about people from further south are the accents. I worked at a grocery store years ago. During the tourist season, a lady came in with a very thick accent and constantly talking about Jesus. She got odd looks from many of the customers.

If someone with a southern accent says to you, "bless your heart," it's not a compliment

Kind of like if you're in the south and someone from the south says, "you're not from around here, are you," you might want to consider leaving the immediate vicinity. That's not a compliment or benign curiosity about your lineage.

However, if you're in the south and someone who isn't from here asks, "you're not from around here, are you," it likely IS a compliment, or at least an invitation for conversation.

"You're not from around here, are you?"

"Um, no"

"Bless your heart."



I laugh. A lot. Bless your heart isn't always an insult, just like it's not always a... whatever you'd call it. Sometimes if someone has had something terrible happen "bless your heart" is a sincerely meant, um, expression of, like, well wishes, or something.

I fail at explaining things. But yeah. It's not always bad.

"you're not from around here, are you" usually is. Depends on the tone taken, what's happening, what the person who's not from around here is doing, ect.

Oh, and if someone prefaces a remark about another person with "bless her/his heart . . ." they aren't getting ready to say something nice about the person, lol.

Sums up my entire 10 years in the Memphis area.

ETA: "Are you related to so-so?" Is often a trick question.

What they really mean to say is, "You're not from around here, are you?"

They just don't want to appear assuming.
