I absolutely agree with you that schools get additional money for special ed children (since the schools then have to hire additional teachers for team taught classes, special ed administrators, para-professionals, etc). They don't get any extra money for a medicated vs. unmedicated student, however, and public schools can't just "kick a kid out". It is INCREDIBLY time consuming and difficult to get a kid removed from a school setting, especially one diagnosed as special ed.

We're going through it right now with one of my students. He is very clearly emotionally disturbed, and our school just doesn't have the resources to help him be successful. He's a danger to himself and other students, and is unable to coexist in a classroom with other kids right now without throwing tantrums and trying to stab himself with paperclips or pens. It's scary. We want him to be placed at the county school for emotionally disturbed students, where there are professionals that are trained in how to deal with those children. We have been fighting a legal battle for a year and a half now to get this to happen, documenting everything this child does and every reaction the staff makes. The boy's teachers have spent hours being instructed by a "behavior specialist" how to handle this child to keep him in school. Lawyers have come to talk to us about special ed rights. The boy's psychologist has been in constant contact with us letting us know about his progress and anything we should be aware of.

I am down right SCARED to teach the class he is in some days, and that's with two teachers in the room (I team it with a special ed teacher, who is AWESOME with this child). I am so afraid that something I say will set him off and he's going to stab himself or the child next to him.

It doesn't matter though, because mom doesn't want him moved out of our school, so he has to stay. Parents have the ultimate authority when it comes to their child (as it should be), and schools really can't "kick the child out" without parental consent. Even the "zero tolerance" weapon/drugs policies that result in automatic suspensions or expulsions for "regular" children don't necessarily apply to special ed children.

I had to check and see where you were located, I thought you were talking about my little cousin. You described him to the T, although he is now 13ish and finally escalated to the point of bringing a knife to school, was charged with a felony and expelled? He has been 'off' since he was a toddler, and has always had problems in school no one has been able to completely 'cure'. I don't know where he will go from here, but my guess is to an even worse lock down school with possible more bad influence (which is the issue with why he hasn't been moved previously). Dad was military, mom is a nurse, average/good people that are reasonably firm (don't allow the kids to run amok, but not too strict). I don't know....I don't see a good future for him.

I live in South GA. HERE it is DEFINITELY not like that. If there is problem child, 9 times out of 10, his parents don't give a flying rats ass and let him do the same stuff at home and he gets his way and he just doesn't understand that at school, said child can't be like that.

Now there are few, and I mean very few, kids I have known that are ADD, ADHD, etc etc and are classified as special needs kids.

And actually, I strongly believe that some parents throw meds at their kids cause they don't want to handle a go go go kind of child.
Example: My 4 year old nephew, Hunter, is said to be ADHD. Do I agree? hell no. I think he is just a 4 year old boy with tons of energy. And honestly, I think that is all it is. He has been like that his WHOLE life and just a few months ago my mom got him on meds. (Hunter and my 6 year old niece, Elizabeth live with my mom and stepdad).
Elizabeth is on ADD meds. Again, she just doesn't care to pay attention to anything that doesn't interest her. Some kids are like that, what I have seen, more so girls than boys.

But some kids DO need medicine for ADD, ADHD, etc. Others don't but parents use it as an excuse. As sad as it is to say that, its true.

This too. We moved him to a different school district and took him off of them and the teacher worked with us and we changed his diet and he was fine. All the sudden he goes back to his mom and hes making straight f's again. He was at LEAST Honor Roll the whole time he was with us off meds.

That's what I'm talking about. It's incredibly common to blame backwards things on this illustrious "South", when in fact, it's all over the freaking place. Not just in the "South". Does nothing to help the stereotype that "the south" is full of backwards red-neck hicks.

It's impossibly stupid.
