If you had the option of selling someone chemotherapy, radiation, along with anti-nausea, pain medication, and in the future other medications such as kidney medication, etc. for...idk, how much money does treating cancer cost? Thousands at least, if not more.

Or selling them a cure for much less, a few hundred dollars, which would you choose?

I hope most of us would choose the second, but I'm not naive enough to think the CEO of Eli Lilly or anyone in a similar position would.

Hell, what about the controversy with the guardasil vaccine - a vaccine that had very controversial side effects and testing done, make MANDATORY by a governor who's #1 campaign sponsor was the man who owned guardasil. How is that legal?

Almost everything I voted for went my way this time so I can't really say I'm horridly disappointed with this election.

We legalized pot. Not that I am interested in smoking it but rather I'm done with wasting the thousands in taxpayer dollars to lock people up for possession.

We legalized gay marriage. Happy bliss for all my G&L friends out there.

The only thing we're still waiting on is the charter school initiative. I have a feeling it'll fail but who knows.

This is why I don't trust large pharmaceutical companies. They are now testing OxyContin on children to keep their patent.

Most schools in the South are already paid to label children as some mental issue ODD, ADD, ADHD, whatever) and give them prescriptions. If you refuse, they kick your kid out of the school. The more kids they label, the more money they get.

I absolutely agree with you that schools get additional money for special ed children (since the schools then have to hire additional teachers for team taught classes, special ed administrators, para-professionals, etc). They don't get any extra money for a medicated vs. unmedicated student, however, and public schools can't just "kick a kid out". It is INCREDIBLY time consuming and difficult to get a kid removed from a school setting, especially one diagnosed as special ed.

We're going through it right now with one of my students. He is very clearly emotionally disturbed, and our school just doesn't have the resources to help him be successful. He's a danger to himself and other students, and is unable to coexist in a classroom with other kids right now without throwing tantrums and trying to stab himself with paperclips or pens. It's scary. We want him to be placed at the county school for emotionally disturbed students, where there are professionals that are trained in how to deal with those children. We have been fighting a legal battle for a year and a half now to get this to happen, documenting everything this child does and every reaction the staff makes. The boy's teachers have spent hours being instructed by a "behavior specialist" how to handle this child to keep him in school. Lawyers have come to talk to us about special ed rights. The boy's psychologist has been in constant contact with us letting us know about his progress and anything we should be aware of.

I am down right SCARED to teach the class he is in some days, and that's with two teachers in the room (I team it with a special ed teacher, who is AWESOME with this child). I am so afraid that something I say will set him off and he's going to stab himself or the child next to him.

It doesn't matter though, because mom doesn't want him moved out of our school, so he has to stay. Parents have the ultimate authority when it comes to their child (as it should be), and schools really can't "kick the child out" without parental consent. Even the "zero tolerance" weapon/drugs policies that result in automatic suspensions or expulsions for "regular" children don't necessarily apply to special ed children.
