Poor guy.

He defintely needs a skin scrape and a fungal culture done. In the meantime, you can give him Benadryl 2-3 times a day, and that will help him with the itchiness and discomfort. The dosage for Diphenhydramine (aka Benadryl) is 1-2 mg per lb of body weight. So if he's 50 lbs, you can start at a 50 mg dosage. With some dogs, the relief is immediate, but with others it can take upwards of a week to start really having an affect.

If this were my dog, I'd give him 75 mg of Benadryl in the am, 50 mg around lunchtime and another 75 mg dose in the pm. (just space it out evenly)

Oh I know. He didn't look like this at all. Had a few patches of hair missing but no redness and they looked like old patches at the time. I talked to the lady that works (or worked) at the shelter he came from. She said that his original owner gave him up when he was a pup because he was having skin issues and that he has always had little flare ups of demodex mange from time to time especially if anything changes in his life, but that this is the worst she has seen on him. He is super super sensitive to change apparently. Calling the vet clinics first thing tomorrow morning if my coworker doesn't get to it before me.

I wish I could take him.

Next year at this time I might be able to get a dog if I succeed in getting a job that allows me to get a place of my own. But lets hope this dog finds somewhere to go before then!

Ya. He went to the vet. It's demodex mange and they said his immune system is probably weakened. They gave him Ivermectin and some meds to treat the mange. I'll have to check what type of meds they gave him tomorrow. I should be seeing him tomorrow.
