I never understood why we're supposed to revere the Romans. They were a bunch of thieving, conniving bullies and all those "modern ideas" weren't even their own. They picked them up from older civilizations and passed them off as theirs. When they couldn't overwhelm areas by force they used coercion. Real admirable bunch

Although . . . thinking about that . . . I guess the one thing we might be able to let them take credit for is modern political maneuvering . . .
