Long car ride with puppy?

Mia was... demon puppy from hell. It was nearly 7 hours driving her back to my place (then 2 weeks later we turned around and did it again). She screamed the whole way almost and puked multiple times.

Sign of things to come.

She was fine, just beautiful in the car . . .

Except the farmer we got her from wanted to show us how well she (and the rest of the pups) ate. Raw. As in a five gallon bucket of meat and organs and stuff from the slaughterhouse . . .

And then, before I could stop them, gave her her last big dose of wormer.

I did not realize that a 34 pound puppy could puke up 40 pounds of . . . stuff. On my lap.

For potty stops we went to rest areas and then carried her 'off the beaten path' to potty, worked great. Did not take her out at all when we stopped at the reserve. Mind you we didn't stop for anything either, no good food.

This is pretty much how our trip went (brought our own food), and we crossed the border although it wasn't much of a hassle aside from getting to booth attendant to give back my puppy so everyone could move along, lol. Our trip was 8 hours home.

But something I just thought of, if you're really that concerned about potty breaks and the area, find an easy to set up x-pen, buy some of the XL puppy wee-wee pads, set up the pen over the pads, then bring a garbage bag in case the stop you make doesn't have a garbage bin for such deposits. Your puppy never has to touch the ground that way .

Oh forgot to add! I brought a duffel bag full of extra blankets, a roll of paper towels, a regular old bath towel, just in case there were any accidents. Thankfully there weren't, she was SO good! She slept almost the entire trip. I did put in her kennel with her a Cuz and a stuffing-free fleece toy I made for her.

Good luck is all I can say... Fred hated it and drooled profusely. SCREAMED like a banshee for the 1st 10 mins, but as soon as I put the radio on, just laid down and whimpered.

Can the puppy sit on someone's knee for the ride?

We had a 7+ our ride home when we got our pup. After about an hour, he slept the rest of the way home. We thought we had an angel; he fooled us!

Do bring some toys, maybe a soft blanket to lay on for a bed, and some water.

Many of the hotels are pet friendly. When we travelled from CT to TN, we had 4 dogs & 2 cats with us. Every hotel was accommodating, even when we had to take the elevator to the 3rd floor!

It started the second we got out of the driveway. I think she was quiet for maybe 1 hour of the total 7 hour trip. My sister was riding with me and telling me we should turn around and take her back. I gave her chews and toys and a blanket. Ended up pulling all that out since she was puking the whole time all over it.

We had a 6 hour car ride... I put Fozzie in his crate, with a fleece bumper bed and a lamb ear, and pet him & cuddled him most of the drive. We stopped once for a potty break at a restaurant and let him potty in a small planter in the parking lot. He slept the whole drive, never whined, he was perfect!

I would definitely ask the breeder to acclimate puppy to a crate and take as many trips in the car as possible.

Rumor puked all over herself and was a crate screamer. Smelling puppy puke for three hours is fantastic. She was much better on the ride from Iowa to Maryland, but I didn't crate her, I just let her lay in the back. She was also around six months old then. We mostly stopped at restaurants and gas stations on that trip.

and my questionable decision making continues....The breeder asked me last night if we would be interested in bringing about puppy back up here with us for a family in SE CT. I said 'Sure!' Here's hoping they travel well
