My store hosted a community movie night for dogs last night.
Since my boss had a baby on Wednesday, the event was put mostly into my hands. It was a lot of work, but it as AWESOME.There's a great little mostly-fenced park around the corner from our store that usually doesn't allow dogs, but we received a by-law exemption for one night. We got a screen set up on the little staging area in the park. We decided to sell liver-sprinkled popcorn and do nail trims on site, and decided to fund-raise for Birch Haven Rescue, an amazing local large.giant breed focused rescue. Therefore, we chose Marmaduke as the movie. Haha. I wish in retrospect that I had brought Finn because he would have LOVED it, but I was also running around like a beheaded chicken trying to get everything done, so it was probably for the best. Next time I'll bring him and just crate him when I'm busy! Anyway, some photos from the event, and you can meet some of my favorite customers! My co-worker Nic and I handing out liver popcorn. ![]() Vania is a foster for Birch Haven rescue. CTV news was covering the event, and Vania got to ham it up for the camera! ![]() Everyone getting cozy while Jeff from the community association sets up the tech. ![]() Cooper! Finnegan's bro from another mo. My massive St. Bernard/Newfie co-worker. ![]() Dane/maybe Dane mix. Adoptable through Birch Haven! ![]() Nitro! His owner and I hung out at Bluesfest this year. Nitro thinks he's a stud. ![]() Crappy shot of Pepper, one of my most favourite labs ever. Her owners are super-nice too. ![]() Starting to fill up! The dogs in the front are Quentin and Lilith, I adore them and their owners. Their mum, the preggo lady in the chair, is pretty much the coolest lady alive. ![]() Jewel! This dog is the sweetest thing ever, you guys. ![]() -MORE- |

Whiskey! An older beagle mix who is full of **** and vinegar. He's so much fun.
![]() I forget this dachshund's name but I absolutely adored her. ![]() One of two pittie mixes these guys own. He headtilted just for the camera. <3 ![]() The other one! This guy classifies as pittie, thus the muzzle (yay BSL) but such a sweetie. ![]() Shaggy poodle mix and amusingly lazy child. ![]() This family was hilariously cute. And the Sheltie's name is Cupcake. CUPCAKE. ![]() Windsor! Windsor is a Birch Haven dog - I forget if he's adopted or adoptable, but I wanted to take him home. ![]() Another Birch Haven adoptable - I think this one is Annie? <3 ![]() Shawn, my boss, thought it'd be fun to have a trick contest with tags on ribbons as "medals" in honour of the Olympics. The winners can get the tags engraved at our store for free. ![]() -MORE- |

Brandon, his partner whose name I don't know, and their beagle Hunter. These guys made the cover photo of our newspaper article!
![]() Brandon and Hunter perform Hunter's "wiggle" for the trick contest. ![]() This beautiful dog - Dutchie? Mal? - did a VERY dramatic play dead that rivaled Finn's. ![]() Best bosses ever. <3 Plus their 4-year old daughter, and their three-day old newborn in the basket. ![]() Crappy dark photos follow, since we had to start the movie at dusk. All of the dogs and people calmed down really well for the movie. Not a lot of barking or noise at that point! ![]() The farmer's market in the background. ![]() Last pic - everyone chilling and laughing. Marmaduke's actually a pretty funny movie - everyone had a ton of fun! ![]() Thanks for looking!

What a good idea. We have nothing like that, EVER. Anywhere.

Pet events here in Ottawa have had a surge recently. Stores like us are looking to Toronto and Montreal, who both do pretty frequent events like these, and starting to do them locally here. Being part of a good franchise helps us - Global stores in larger centres have some great ideas that pass down to us - though, this event was inspired by the beachside outdoor movie nights locally that do not allow dogs.

Great pictures, so many adorable dogs!!!! Thank you for sharing
That would be such a great concept for somebody to capitalize on. They should make an indoor doggie play space that has movie nights. If it was an enclosed space and Pookins could be off leash, she'd lay down and snooze the whole evening |
