The most common guesses I get are other sighthounds - greyhound, saluki, borzoi, etc - which I can understand. But I've gotten some really strange ones. Multiple people have asked if Cricket is a Dalmatian, because of her black ticking. We also got Papillon once - this was at a rest stop on the way to a dog show, and we were travelling with some other people so there were five or six LHWs there. This lady came up all confidently and complimented us on our beautiful Papillons.
I think the weirdest one is Weimaraner, which we've gotten three times for Journey. Apparently she strongly resembles a large, dilute sporting dog:

For the record, I am absolutely awful in mixing up SWH with LHW! I try not to guess because I'm always wrong. =)
I certainly didn't expect the lady to spout "Catahoula!" but I was definitely amused by how upset she was. Poor woman thought I was horrible for shaving down "such a pretty dog." Hahaha. Mammoth gets "wolf cross" all the time which is interesting (and once "OSO!" from the Salvadorian family down the road). And MHMR...I can't even imagine. At least we have the advantage of merle. You and Boone are just doomed to be black and tan coonhounds for the rest of your lives =P

Goose is called a Shar pei (or mix thereof)like 90% of the time. Nog is usually called a Pug/Terrier mix

Pretty much everyone recognizes Maddie as a cocker... one time I was asked if she was a golden retriever, though
and a couple times argued with if she was a cavalier, because she's so "small" hahaWith Bailey I am used to miniature collie or toy collie, I expect it. Border Collie made me chuckle a little. Pom... Uhm.. no!!

The only insane one I have run into is apparently Yoshi is a furry pit. I should have been able to tell by her red nose :/

Gambit gets Aussie mix all the time due to his merle coloring. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe Aussie's carry sable merle.
The other perrenial favorite is wolfdog. My solid sable merle 32lb dog with the tipped over ears. To be fair, though, I do think people sense something different about him, and just don't think coydog. Argon's best guess is was weasel.
