Default declining a wedding invite?

A school friend of mine is getting married in August - and I just recieved the invite. Unfortunatly, I'm going to be in the states on the same day... I'd still love to send a wedding gift, or visit them once I get back!

How do I nicely decline? Do I send a card - or do I call them..? I have never done this before... HALP!

The invite should have an option for accept/decline. Then I'd send a wedding gift with a note that says you wish you could share their special day but would love to celebrate when you're both in town.

There should be an RSVP card in the invitation.. but if not, a nice letter works just as well Here is the template I use..

Dear Whatever,
I'm sincerely regret that I'll be unable to attend your wedding on xx,yy as I'll be traveling out of the country. I send my love and sincerest congratulations and look forward to celebrating with you and xxxxxx when you return from your honeymoon. I'm sure your wedding will be beautiful and can't wait for pictures!

Sending my love,
You

Just strap that onto your gift and you'll be fine.

Although I so wish people would remember to put RSVP or accept/decline cards in the invites. WHY MAKE THINGS SO AWKWARD
..and how do they figure out how many place settings?..

weird.
