This was hard for me to answer because I live 2 places.

In NY, there is a bottle deposit fee and then you get it back when you recycle them at the can deposit vending machines at the grocery store. I hear there is a place nearby that you can take a bag of cans and they'll just give you monies.

In OH, we would collect cans and sell them to the recycling center for the cost (or a little less) than the current rate of aluminum.

Beer bottles/cans sort of thing yes. Regular bottles and cans .. nope

Returning them is a pain, often I will just toss them in the regular recycling anyway. Its a lot easier than keeping them and planning a trip to the beer store.

We pay a 0,25 or 0,15 fee on plastic, some glass bottles and cans. We get the fee back when we bring our bottles back to the supermarket (they all take all bottles back nowadays).

Our milk jugs are recycled at the place we buy the milk. You get a bit off your purchase for every jug returned because they just wash and reuse them.
I don't think there's a fee for the bottles, though. No money given for recycling, either. (Unless it's aluminum. The public bins don't take metal scraps.)

^ That! I make a mint after a big BBQ, because everyone BYOBs and leaves their empty bottles.
