Default Nikon D40

Up until now I only have p&s cameras... but I think I need a faster camera to catch up to the little ones

Do you think this is a good buy?

Thx!

I loved my old Nikon D40. And I've tried out a few digital ones, too, and I liked them as well. Great ammy camera, but definitely a camera that you can grow and learn on as well. Extra lenses are all the better!

I'd get it, if it were me. But then again, I don't even have my p&s at the moment. My husband stole it.

My brother has the D90, so he can tutor me. I'm just wondering if the asking price is reasonable.

I think the asking price is reasonable.........especially since the 55-200 is a VR lens. I have the D40, it came with 18-55 and 55-200 (not VR, just kit) and we paid about 600 brand new. Then I ordered the 55-200 VR lens for about 150.00? (i think)

So yes, if it's in good shape and she has all the original boxes and such, I think that is a fair price

I've had the camera with the 18-55 lens for about 4.5 years and the zoom lens for almost 4 years. That camera was my baby and I've never dropped it or exposed it to water. Everything is in perfect working order. There are no huge scratches or anything like that on the body or lens, but the camera body does show minimal signs of wear--but hardly anything. I've taken about 6000 pictures with the camera. This may seem high but honestly I've never had a single problem with this camera and would still be using it if my husband hadn't surprised me with something else. It would be a great camera for you if this is your first dslr.

I'll take $375. This is my absolute lowest price. I paid close to $800 for everything new. The zoom lens alone I could sell for $200
This is her response to my question about the condition of the camera.. For some reasons, I'm always a bit skeptical about buying second-hand electronic items... but it looks like I don't have much choices as I want a reliable first DSLR camera, but don't want to spend a fortune on a brand new one at this time.

If you're going used, check out Adorama and KEH - they offer guarantees on their gear, which you can't get from a private seller.

The D40 was my favourite camera, I was so upset when I dropped it I'd have another in a heartbeat!

I think that's reasonable! That's what I paid for my D40 2 years ago, on ebay... came with those same 2 lenses too (except mine might not be VR, I can't remember). Keep in mind that the 55-200mm lens is probably $200 brand new.

So anyway - I love my D40 and think that's a fair price

I do think it's a fair price. My first DSLR was a D40 and it was a fantastic starter camera for me. I bought it refurbished through adorama.com. My new camera (D5100) I bought refurbished (camera and lens) through Nikon.
