My Yorkie gets spayed in the a.m. Ugh!
Hi guys, my baby girl is getting spayed in the a.m. and I am a nervous wreck. She is our first and I have no idea what to expect, anyone out there that can give me some thoughts, suggestions, etc. to get through this I would greatly appreciate it.

Calm down. You don't want her to get nervous because she senses you're upset, do you? Our dogs pick up on our emotions, so just try to relax a little bit, play a game with her and do the things you always do with her. Take a deep breath and just have a good snuggle with her.
I think these things are harder on us than on our dogs. Let us know how she is, and how you held up!

Renee... thanks for the advise I really do think she sensed something because I kissed on her all morning and so did the kids. She just kept staring at us like what is going on... LOL I dropped her off at 8:30 this a.m. and I'm hoping all goes well and I will be able to pick her up around 4:00... I guess my questions are... what should I expect? Will she be sick, lazy, alot of pain, will we be able to pick her up?

You really don't want to pick her up if you can avoid it. You also don't want her to do a lot of jumping. She's just had the equivalent of a hysterectomy, so she will have a sore belly. She'll probably be a bit "off," maybe cranky, restless and want you to be in the room with her but not touch her. Don't take it personally if she growls or snaps, just leave her alone. Anesthesia can affect different dogs in different ways - just like it does people - and it takes a lot longer to get it completely out of the system than you really think.
Don't necessarily let her get by with bad behaviour; if she misbehaves walk off and ignore her, just understand that it's probably just post-surgery stress and the anesthesia. She probably won't have a lot of appetite when she comes home. A little unsalted chicken broth to start, and add a few tidbits of cooked white chicken meat later. I'd even hold off on the dog food for a day or two, then re-introduce it to her in small portions throughout the day. You don't want to load her sore belly up with too much food at one time! And have fun trying to keep her quiet for the next ten days or so . . . You really don't want her playing any games that involve tugging until she's healed up.

She should be perfectly fine. Most dog's recover quite well the same day. Most don't even act like they're in any pain. Some will act mopey for the next day. Just don't let her do much running for a week or two so that she doesn't rip the stictches, but even that shouldn't be problem.
I'm glad you're getting her spayed. She'll be healthier and happier.

Renee - yes we did make it through... She was really tired the first night and most of the next day but after that she was back to normal.. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences and thoughts.
