Look at most Chows and you'll get a pretty good idea, I'd think.

I think Shar Peis and chows have a more stilted gait due to their rear angulation.

Unfortunately I have no pictures of peis that look as bad as that. I have seen what you are talking about. In the pei community we often discuss this issue. One of the other pei owners shared the following video as this is not a thing that is limited to our breed, but there are many breeds that struggle with the popular in the ring appearance vs the functional appearance of the breed as discussed in the standard. http://youtu.be/Hex00WjSobE The bonemouth is the way these dogs looked when they came to us and the way they still look in their homelands. That being said my little girl is a beauty I think...not that I am biased or anything

i can't think of the breed name, but it's on the tip of my tongue.
it's some sort of molosser mix that has an INSANE amount of wrinkles and extra skin. that's what the overdone Peis remind me of. i believe it is a breed developed in China, large and generally red in colour. i swore it started with a D but i may be wrong. ETA: FOUND IT! Dosa Inu i don't believe this is typical of the breed, but i don't know enough about it to know whether it is. googling it gives me a lot of dogs that look to be Tosa, but i don't know if it is a spelling error on someone's part, or confusion, or if these dogs are truly meant to look more like Tosas than blankets. anywho, this is what they can look like, at any rate:

That is horrifying and not a well bred Tosa Ken.

in my excitement, i forgot to put that from what i've read, these are called 'Dosa Inu' or Korean Mastiffs. when i found them years ago, i could only find one page on them, and it wasn't in English. but the pictures on the website showed dogs like that, and worse.
sadly, i have seen Peis that look almost identical to this. from breeders and in rescues. the bonemouths are such nice dogs. and slighter meat mouths as well. i don't know why people can't just be happy with the moderate amount of wrinklage and extra skin. |

I remember a thread about the dosas, if I'm not mistaken it's a mix of neos and tosas.
