Hello friends
and a special hello to the petpainter

I shall try to help you to enhance your way of paintings dogs. So take the best of my critiques.
I told you showing my previous painting, that you can paint with only 4 pigments cobalt blue,ochre yellow, magenta and indigo.
Mixing the 3 first pigments you can have all sort of light grey
Mixing the 3 last pigments ... all sort of dark shades, close to black.

Now! to paint with these 4 colours, you have to learn how to see these colours in life or on a photo. I borrowed the images of our friend thepetpainter

With these colored lines, I showed the more evident colours reflected on the fur ...
of course, the yellow can be mixed with the red, and give an orange or a brown
and the blue can be violet bue or dark blue...
You can create and paint all these shades with the three basic colours.

Try to paint with glazes..
the first layer will show very basic colours.
then you go slowly painting the fur, giving more shades
and glaze after glaze, you will be closer to the realty.


Now looking to our friend 's painting, we can see that he found a color, close to the dog's fur and used mainly the same pigment.
I read yesterday a few pages written by a main painter, saying that "if you use the same shade on more than an inch square, you can bet that your painting will be boring."
I found this sentence very true.
When you paint, contrast each shade, each angle, each light.. exagerate colours and shadows ...

If you copy the images on your computer, and enlarged them,
the contrasts of colours on the first photo will be really evident.

It is also interesting to see that each one has a different vision.
I see the dog on the photo mostly dark blue
when our friend who painted it, see it mostly brown red..

Think that Monet and most of the impressionists were myopic...
They painted blured landscapes and that was the charm of their paintings.

You can also search on the web for "fauvist" or "fauvism"
and see how they were painting with strong and opposite colors.

Great lesson, Cyrille. It has many applications to different mediums. I'm going to remember it and look forward to more advice since I hope one day to get back to spending some of my time creatively again.
