Canine Diet

Today we had a nutrition lecture in my zoo science class. We were talking about canine diets, and I decided to look up the product they feed (and most zoos feed) thinking it was possibly a good source for premade raw.

Not quite what I expected:

CANINE DIET: INGREDIENTS
Horsemeat, meat by-products, dried beet pulp, calcium carbonate, dicalcium phosphate, salt, Vitamin Premix (Choline chloride, vitamin E supplement, niacine, vitamin B-12 ribiflavin, folic acid, vitamin A acetate, thiamine mononitrate, d-calcium pantothenate, mineral oil, d-biotin, pyridoxine hydrochloride, vitamin D-3 supplement), taurine, Trace Mineral premix (zinc oxide, mangonous oxide, copper oxide, mineral oil, sodium selenite, calcium iodate)

I actually expected a higher quality food. Sure, it's raw, but...ewww. They say on their website they don't use 4-D animals, but then they list an unnamed meat by-product as the second ingredient? Sure, maybe they don't use 4-D animals, but the ingredients say that it's possible. Unnamed meat can be pretty much ANY source.

Oh, and here's the "premium carnivore diet":

INGREDIENTS
Horsemeat, powdered cellulose, dicalcium phosphate, calcium carbonate,Vitamin Premix (vitamin E supplement, niacine, d-biotin, Vitamin A acetate, riboflavin, pyridoxine, folic acid, d-calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin D-3 supplement, menadione sodium bisulfate complex-source of vitamin K activity), Trace Mineral Premix (zinc oxide, manganese oxide, copper oxide, mineral oil, sodium selenite, calcium iodate), Choline chloride, taurine, salt


Sawdust as the number 2 ingredient? Really??


So much for a good source of premade raw with a novel protein...

They do have raw horse and beef bones, though. I wish they had prices on their website.

I think I would just *die* before feeding horse meat to my dogs... omg. :,(

I love horses just as much as dogs, and I feel they are beyond intelligent and useful in a thousand ways beyond as a meat source. I would just as soon feed my dogs other dogs. But that's me! Also a wussy vegetarian.

Interesting, I don't see it as horrible though.
