Something's not right. He's been at his butt all day, lots of licking and messing with it. And I lift his tail to show my boyfriend and his hair around it had some blood on it. I'm not thinking it's an anal gland abscess, but I'm thinking it's not too good. He's sleeping now, but I go to work at 10 am and my favorite Dr is working tomorrow so I'm gonna have her take a look.

HOPING its not an AG abscess, those get pricey and I don't wanna put my boy through surgery :/

Could it possibly be allergies? One of my dogs starts to lick his butt when his allergies start. I give him Benedryl and it helps. Hope Chance feels better soon.

Or worms? A friends bull terrier had a similar problem, biting at his butt, etc, and they were worried it was neurological, he's not quite right to begin with, but I suggested they worm him first, before spending tons of money on tests, and he hasn't done that since. The blood I'd be concerned about, but being that he's a bull terrier, he couldn't exactly reach his butt to obsessively lick it for hours either.

Nope. It was anal glands. They were impacted/infected. He had blood on the hair around it this morning so I took him in and he was in pain. My Dr expressed the glands and he got out basically like gold ball to tennis ball size. Chance has never had anal gland issues.

He's on clindamycin now, and hopefully we caught it early enough. My vet said we need to keep a close eye on him so it doesn't end up being a perinial hernia.

He's back to normal playing, wagging his tail (previously he was keeping it down,) and hopefully we caught this early.

Luckilly it didn't abscess or we would have had to do emergency surgery

Grimm sympathizes. He had an impacted anal gland that did end up abscessing a few months ago. ( he was on antibiotics, but it abscessed anyway). No surgery though, the vet just slice it open so it could drain. It healed nicely, thank heavens. I did have to cone him for a few days so he'd leave it alone, but after that it healed quickly. That was his first anal gland issue as well.

Ouch! The best part is my 75 percent discount, so even if surgery did happen, Im covered pretty well lol. Glad hes better! I cant imagine the discomfort
