Default Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers.. anyone..

I want a Nova Scotia Duck Toller but I don't know an awful lot about them. I wanted a golden, but everyone has goldens and I wanted something different cos I had a golden when I was a kid.

Anyone know anything about tollers?

I think Robin Williams has one or was in a movie with a NSDT. They look like Aussie/Brittany crosses to me, even though I know they're not. I've heard they are good dogs to have.

I was very interested in the breed too. My first encounter with one was at an obedience class. It was a rescue as he was too hyper for the family. Boy, he sure was a handful !! My 2nd cousin in Toronto area waited 5 months for a pup....I never have met him , but while visiting her sister this summer and asking her about him, I guess he too is a handfull. I really thought this was a breed to consider as I've had Goldens for 56 years and thought maybe they ( being smaller ) would be a breed for me to consider. I'd have to do a lot of research at this point....maybe they are being over bred too quickly. I'm interested in what you find. When I first heard of them, I thought they sounded grand.....now ????

Yeah, I heard from a client at the shop that she had a duck toller, from a breeder in vancouver, about 20 years ago, and ended up having to give it away because it was really crazy. That worried me a bit.. but then anything can put you off any breed right? I mean people put me off goldens cos they say that the dog they used to be is totally disappearing and they are getting worse or something. But they can be fantastic dogs. I guess I need to meet some tollers.. I just don't know where. I go to dog shows but you can't tell the real behavior of a dog from a show cos its all formal!

BUt I do hear from people too, that tollers are a nice dog.

Yes, I'm sorry that the Golden has become become so popular... Labs too ! But, believe me there are still good Golden breeders out there !! I doubt if I could trust anyone but a show breeder today . When I started breeding 35 years ago , There were very few doing what I was doing.... it was really before the BYB Golden explosion. I really doubt you could find a 6 generation of lines from anyone but a show breeder. Sad.

Unfortunately, I've heard nothing but negative about the new "Duck Troller" breed. They're VERY smart... but to their detriment. Like a border collie on steroids. If someone's interested in getting one, I hope they do their homework...

Hmm. That Sucks... I need to meet some tollers before I get one, but I just don't know how. The breeder I have found in Vancouver said she could arrange for me to meet them but thats so far to go. I wonder what else I could do..

not to dissuade you from your breed of choice, but i don't think it's a good idea to pick a breed just for the looks.

it's much more important to choose a breed that fits your lifestyle and your expectations, otherwise you might end up being very disappointed, with a dog that is frustrating you because it doesn't quite fit your needs.

here are a few resources you might want to look at, some seem to be the same at first glance, but there are some nuances of difference, so try them all and make notes for your further research.

http://selectsmart.com/beta_dog/
http://www.purinaone.com/dogcare_breed_selector.asp
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/search.htm
http://www.showdog.com/Breeds/breedselector.aspx
http://www.canismajor.com/dog/tchoose.html
http://www.wonderpuppy.net/choose.htm

after the first few rounds of eliminations, you should end up with a small enough number for some serious research.

and if you like retrievers but don't want a lab or golden, also check out the flat coated retriever, they are greast dogs.
