Building agility equipment - what to use for contacts

So this morning, I built a teeter for Lucy. Considering I've never built anything in my life, I'm pretty darn pleased with myself!

My question is, what do you guys use for the surface? Right now it's just a board, so I obviously need something to provide traction. I was thinking of mixing sand in with paint. Good idea? Anyone have better suggestions? I saw that cleanrun sells traction stuff, but I'm not paying $100+ for it!
