Yes, and I think it was the San Francisco SPCA that called them St. Francis Terriers for a period of time, too.

That's very interesting!

Really doesn't make much sense to keep them split up like that. Rough and Smooth Collies are considered two varieties of the same breed (In North America). They are interbred, but they do not show against each other (expect for at specialties when BOV rough and BOV smooth compete for BOB) Each dogs AKC registration lists them as a "Collie" not Rough Collie or Smooth Collie.

Now in most European countries Rough and Smooths are considered two separate breeds and most FCI countries do not allow them to be interbred, but this change in Europe only occurred around the mid 1990's. Before that they were still considered two varieties of the same breed.

This is how it is for Belgians everywhere else in the world, and how I wish they would do it here.

Back in the 1700's Labs were called Lesser Newfoundlands and Lesser St John's Dogs.

ETA- forgot about Elkhounds!

Chinese Crested
Crested
Chinese Edible Dog (mmmm... tasty lol)
