It depends what you want to do with the pictures.

Are you just going to print out regular 4X6 or 5X7 prints? Then you really dont need above 5 or 6 MPs.

But if you plan to do a lot of editing, cropping, blowing up, etc... you would want to go for something over 10.

I dont know a lot about the Canon camera though.

Most cameras seem to be 6+ megapixels these days, so I wouldn't worry about them at all. Mine is 6 megapixels and prints out 11x14 photos perfectly fine, so unless you're wanting to print photos larger than that, I wouldn't worry. My brother recently bought himself a Canon Powershot Elph of some sort and I think it's 10 or 12 megapixels.
