I don't see where actual "protecting" is mentioned.

I just arrived home on Saturday with the sweetest little thing(male). I am a huge dog-lover, having lost my cock-a-poo in May I decided to get another. However, my lifestyle does not support taking care of him, since I travel a great deal. He is affectionate, no signs of separation anxiety, wee-wee pad trained, has up to date shots, and is just perfect! I paid 1440.00 from Raising Rover on Lexington Ave. The owner has a fabulous reputation and plenty of years in business. Many of my friends have purchased their puppies from him and I did the same. Need him to go to a loving home. Call me for price.

Gorgeous Malti-poo-10 weeks

So this person buys a dog 3 days ago from a pet store and now wants to find a home for it.

I dont think they said protecting, they said watch over... I live alone and my dogs "watch over me"... they are both less then 5 pounds, no they are not going to attack an intruder... but they come lay with me when I am sad, provide entertainment when I am bored, need attention so I must think of someone besides myself, and alert me when something is out of the ordinary.

I am sure their spouse is probably deployed and the dogs do the same for them and the post was supposed to be "cute".

Unless a post is really, really bad I hate when people go on craigslist and start flagging everything... so you would rather someone dump the dog on the side of the road and not try and find a home for it?

Exactly my point about "watch over."

Re: your last paragraph PM.....If they're not selling them to make a big profit...if they're not a puppy mill, then I agree. Far too many dogs and cats are dumped on the side of the road. That's how Toker was found...in a black garbage bag with her dead litter mates at 4 weeks old, in a ditch at the side of a road. That's how those little kittens I found were handled....dumped at an isolated park in the cold...left to die. I almost wasn't going to stop that day at the park on my way home from Seattle. But decided that yes...my dogs need to get out for a little run and pee break.

yeah maybe it is different when you end up with an animal that was dumped... you would do anything to prevent another animal from the same fate... my current cat was also found dumped on the side of the road in the middle of winter, she was probably 6 weeks at the time... it is really heartbreaking to think about her outside like that.

You didn't get your dog because someone told you she's a good protector, so you'd have no reason to expect that from her.

As far as the CL "rehoming fee", that's just a PC phrase for "here's what I'm charging".
Oh come ON! There's a big difference between someone who already owns a dog that claims it will protect them. Big deal. I've seen a lot of "lap" dogs go ballistic over their owners. That's a form of protection.

However, claiming that PUPPIES have been trained to protect a DEPLOYED MEMBER'S SPOUSE (not anyone else, mind you), is an obvious load. Since I'm the OP of the ad and I don't even own a lap dog, I stand by my claim that it's BS.

It is horrible to think PM. I suspect some of the cats I've had in the past were also dumped. I found them is strange places, out in the country, one with a litter in the middle of the road, one out in the brush. They may have wandered off but they were looking needy and one very thin and wormy. It's just amazing what people will do to get rid of their responsibility. Now, these people who advertise like that aren't God's gift to animals, especially when they produce them for profit. And if that's the case, they should not be rewarded. There is a line, I guess where you have to sacrifice some puppies and kittens to put a stop to repeat offenders...who breed irresponsibly and for profit....like the worst byb and mills.

But if this CL add was for one oops litter and the person is trying to find good homes without making a lot of money, then that's a little different, imo.

That form of protection is normally resource guarding. (protecting himself and his valuables) That is different from protecting his owner from harm. Most dogs do not protect with it in mind that they're saving their owner from harm. It is very often the dog protecting himself or his stuff. LOL. Most of the time....not always.

That was not a spouse, I can almost guarantee it. I *am* a spouse, and I think it's sick to even mention it in an ad. My husband has been gone 3 out of the last 5 years on deployments...if I were not a strong, independent, INTELLIGENT person I's be all over those pups paying whatever they were asking. And for what? A mixed breed dog that could have been saved from a pound that I probably paid $$$ for and could very likely end up at the pound anyway. Six of one, half a dozen of the other. It's ridiculous to make such a claim and it's wrong to play on those in the military. I see nothing "cute" about it.

As far as flagging goes, you want to sell your BYB pups? Take an ad out in the paper or on Kijiji or post flyers. CL is not the place...the amount of BYB breeders selling of CL is sickening.

BYB are sickening any way you look at it. But how does one know if any particular person is breeding on purpose, over and over again? Was this person asking for a lot of money for these pups? Or a reasonable adoption fee to cover costs or to make sure an adopter really values the puppy as a family member...not some research scientist? Maybe it was an oops litter...a one time mistake. It is hard to tell. Selling in the newspaper or selling on CL doesn't make much difference, does it? I agree that supporting people who are breeding irresponsibly by purchasing their high priced puppies is just perpetuating the problem. But preventing some puppies from being dumped...if this person isn't a byb out to make a buck, is better than being dumped.
