Default possible double paw pad amputation???

We have a vet appointment tomorrow to know for sure.

Ruckus has always had a big deep split in both of his back paw pads. they have been there for a couple of years now. I have tried everything as far as creams, balms, ointments, and bandaging. The vets have said that as long as it does not get any worse we will not worry yet.
well it has gotten lots worse. on one of his paw pads you can actually turn half of it inside out, its split so deep. The reason it will not heal is because the tissue has died. So It looks like we will be cutting of dead tissue in hopes that it heals. He will probably need this on both paw pads... but of course we will not do it at the same time.

I am actually VERY worried. I personally know a dog that had a simular issue like Ruckus has, but it was left untreated. The dog eventually got nerve damage so bad in his paw that he would not feel the floor underneath his foot. It just made the foot stay in his way. So they had to amputated his let (you cannot just amputate a foot, because the dog will be trying to use the leg and really make things worse!)

It would be one thing if this was just one of Ruckus paw pads... but its both!

I hope and pray that everything will be fine and I never have to get him a doggy wheelchair due to having both back legs amputated! I know I am jumping to conclusions, but it is still so scary!

Since it causes him no pain at all, we will still be going on our back packing trip, but after that its probably bye bye paw pads

Poor Ruckus. But, it sounds like there is hope - that's good. Enjoy your backpacking trip and hopefully it won't be as bad as you imagine. Good luck.

Well, both of his paw pads need a very large section amputated. There of course is a pretty big risk of infection and he will be on antibiotics and ointments for a long while.

we are hoping that it develops a callous on it and works just like any other paw pad. Either way it is very likely that Ruckus will be wearing dog boots for the rest of his life.

Thats no big deal! I am sad that it has came to this, but it could be alot worse. He will have more shoes that I do!
one for around the house
one for walks
one for hiking
one for snow

Poor guy. There doesn't seem to be any option for you. It will no doubt be interesting in all aspects of the 'boot thing'. You have a good attitude - wishing you the best.
