I had thought about an Airedale for a while too, they look pretty awesome. However, my parents basically threatened to take me off their insurance (Medical, dental, optical etc) if I got another dog sooo...

My old Australian Shepherd Mathilda (RIP) was a very diligent watchdog. The mail carriers called her "killer" because of her fearsome, hoarse barking.
I tell you, because she was a family loving livestock registry dog that she would bite the faces off of anyone who would try to harm us. No, I'm not kidding.

Val, I had a blind Aussie (from rescue, double merle breeding, no doubt, got him literally moments before he was to be put down at 3 months old) and he was a stellar watchdog. Fearless, too.

I briefly had an oversized Sheltie that was a great watchdog and a pesonal protection dog, at that. When pressed, he leapt into the air and went after the face. Sort of like a demon furball. The one time this occurred it literally scared the crap out of the would be mugger, who fell into the gutter in the rain, covering his head and face. Monte was leashed, so he never actually made contact...but his teeth clicked in the air literally an inch from the guys face as i dragged him back. It was quite impressive.

Probably due to bad genes, in fact, my puppy had to be seen by a veterinary ophthalmologist before he was taken to his new home at adoption time.
