Yet Another Vet Visit
Turns out her limping was just a minor soft tissue injury, but she's also got a case of vaginitis and a UTI now, unfortunate but common side effect of the prednisone. So now she's on 10 days of antibiotics, then we start back on the prednisone again.
This just makes me mad - she needs the immunosuppressors for her her MMM, but she needs antibiotcs for the side effects of the immunosuppressors... but we can't give them at the same time, so it's like a see-saw effect. GRRR.

Without knowing anything about the underlying medical issue...maybe there's a way to take a more balanced approach (instead of mediating between the benefits and side effects of two different types of drugs)...like, maybe a homeopathic/naturopathic vet could suggest something?
It sounds like a "whole system" approach would be really preferable.  Poor pup! And poor you...no one likes constant vet visits.

It's an idea, but I'm not going the homeopathic route on this. To my knowledge, there isn't a solid, reliable homeopathic substitute for hardcore antibiotics, or prednisone. I also do not think any homeopathic treatments have been studied especially in regards to MMM... and I won't' allow my dog to be the guinea pig for that.
There is always going to be this see-saw effect. The drug used to stop the immune system from attacking the masticatory muscles is an immuno-suppressant. Immuno-suppressants do their job, and suppress the immune system... allowing for other nasties to take hold. There is no balance to be had. Don't get me wrong, I'll use homeopathic remedies for certain things - but when it comes to something this serious, I don't mess around - I use the drugs that have been clinically shown to improve the dogs' condition.
