So, I am wanting to adopt a dog, a 6 month old who has been exposed to ticks, even had an infected tick bite (am in MN) and has not had a lymes vaccination. What are the chances he will get lymes or some other disease? He had the infected bite at 4 months and is healthy now.....What would you do if you really wanted this guy?
Signed, Desperately longing for pup yet scared |

Infected in what way? I know that sounds like a silly question, but is it infected because the bite got dirty and uncared for, or...?
If it were me, I would look up how many cases of Lyme disease have occurred recently in your area. I would also talk to a vet, to see what would be done if the dog started to show symptoms, etc so I could make an educated decision. And check into my funds if that were to happen. Does the dog appear {otherwise} healthy? None of my dogs (including foster) have had the lyme vaccine.... and I had a tick attached to me not to long ago, and I am fine So if it were me I would probably adopt the dog anyway. I tend to think with me heart, other than my head sometimes, though ![]() Edited to add: I want more details! Rescue, shelter ????

Ask about a Lyme test. I'm not sure if they do it on dogs or how expensive it is, but find out.
If they knew he had an infected tick bite and is located in an area that lyme disease is common, why didn't they do a round of antibiotics just incase? |

Have them do a Snap 4,,which tests for Heartworm, Lyme Disease, canine erhlichiosis and equine erhlichiosis..In fact I am actually surprised they did NOT test him after having an infected tick bite..
Even if the dog has lyme/erhlichia(another tick disease),,it is easily treated with antibiotics.. I live in Lyme CT,,ticks are a normal way of life around here unfortunately..It would not prevent me from adopting a dog when it can be treated..just as side note,,it can also reoccur but again, treat with antibiotics.. diane |
