Default How to use sniffing ability!

Lola seems to have a really good sense of smell, but it can be quite irritating when she's on the lead and decides to try and pull me over to a scent she's found. I was just wondering if anyone had any games we could try for fun which involve her sniffing something out?

Thanks

Your pet has a potential to be a bomb-sniffing dog. Hehe.

Gunnar likes to play a hide the toy game. I'll put him in a down/stay in one room, or on one side of my house, and then go hide a toy or object somewhere else in the house or in the yard. Then I go back to him, and release him with a "search" command. He'll tear off and find the object.

I have him locating my wallet and keys now- a very good thing since I misplace them often.

You can start real easy- lay the object out in the open. Gradually make it harder to find- shoved between couch cushions, up higher (to keep them from always thinking it'll be at ground level). I've even hidden stuff in the kitchen cabinets and he'll have to mark that he's found it by barking or pawing at the door.

I dunno if you have the cattle or horses to play this game but I'll mention it.
My son started this because he likes to paint the cattle and horses Sioux style, but needs to tire them out before making them stand still for hours.
He picks a horse or steer then tramps the front feet in liverworst
then lets the whole herd out the gates running .. they always end up on the north lot, that's a good distance maybe of 215 acres or so. Then he goes and gets a dog, usually Granduer because she's fast, Sara if he's wanting to paint a yearling. That's a rule by the way. Anyhow, he makes her sit then tells her to **** *** **** after pointing to where the liverworst was crushed in the grass by the front feet. Off she goes bringing back the one animal that will be painted and keeping my son and his friends busy for hours.
He keeps times, friends involved, pictures and animals name in a "hobby" book ...

Some people's kids.

I hide treats all over the house sometimes before I leave for work so Grizz can spend the morning sniffing them all out. He loves it. I always lock him up in a room while I hide everything. He's so funny..as soon as I open the door to the room I hide him and point he walks right in and sits down and waits quietly til I am done. He knows! LOL
