When is the best age to neuter a dog?

I've heard all sorts of ages, but if I remember correctly, I've heard between 6 months and a year is a good time.

Guess it's getting about that time for Luke, hmmm?

I have been told that the best age is around 6 months, prior to the animal going into heat. If it is a male it might prevent the marking business. I love all sorts of pets too, and I would have kept any puppies my little girl had. But for health purposes we spayed and neutered at age 6 months.
