Default Are you getting any pets for Christmas?

I dont agree with getting dogs or cats for Christmas if you havent done your research. A dog is for forever not just for Christmas. But I might be getting a leopard gecko, dont worry, I already have one so he wont be just a christmas present, in fact I am getting him after Christmas. I am most likely getting a fish tank but that doesnt count as a pet does it?

IMO, I wanted to add any kind of pets to the list. I don't believe it's just for cats and dogs -- everything else including rabbits, birds, hamsters, etc. should be a life commitment, whether it be a small pet or a big pet.

Not speaking about you, of course, since you're aware you're getting one and you know all about their care. Just speaking for the general.

It just angers me to look at some of those classifieds sections in papers and see headings describing pet sales like "GREAT FOR XMAS GIFT." Um, no.

I'm self-gifting a Rex Dumbo rat as a buddy for my rescue rat, just as soon as he gets over these shuckle-darn lice he picked up... *sprays house with permethrin* Noticed them the DAY I was supposed to pick up his new little curly haired friend. So my free rescued rat who was bashed on a table and into a wall in an effort to kill him for a snake now has a lovely vet bill and daily cage scrubbings for the next two weeks... but I love him just the same...

Oh my goodness I am jealous!!

I'm not getting any pets for Christmas. I wish I could get 2 rats though...not really as a Christmas gift of course, I wouldn't really want to be surprised like that.

I think a pet for Christmas is fine if you've done the research. If you're a parent, and you've done the research on the breed, and dogs in general I think buying a puppy for your child/children is perfectly acceptable. Even responsible breeders have litters that end up available close to Christmas.

I asked for either a leopard gecko, rabbit, or ferret for Christmas, but my dad says no more pets, so we'll see.

I've decided I want a ferret! Fat chance though.

I think if my partner surprised me with a puppy for my bday/christmas I'd die of happiness but I totally disagree on Christmas puppies and I'd be mad as hell if he did. I've promised myself we'll get a pupper in the Spring and at the very least I know that if we go for a breeder I'm not lining the pockets of any who have 'timed' a litter for Santa. I also may find just the little guy for me as a throwaway Christmas present in the local shelters.

Puppies are not presents. NO responsible breeder would EVER send a puppy home during the holidays.

DIXIE, puppies are not presents, and two puppies at once is not a good idea.

That's a broad statement to make. A responsible breeder researched the potential owner. A Christmas puppy does not always mean that that dog will be neglected, and it is unfortunate that so many of them are.
