Default Meet the Newest Members of the Family

About three weeks ago I adopted a trio of gerbils from the shelter I volunteer with up here in Maine. They've had a ton of gerbils for the last 6 months or so and are having trouble adopting them out, so they were free (plus they let me take their tank, though I'm using a bigger one for them). I walked in and the woman working there asked how many I was looking to adopt and I said I had room for two or three. She got super excited and said I should definitely take three, that there was one trio of boys I should look at. So I got myself three lovely boys who I've named Theo, Darwin, and Logan. I was sort of bummed because the shelter paired all of the similar looking gerbils together, so all three are nearly identical which makes it quite difficult to tell them apart, but I'm figuring it out.

They've been pretty awesome so far. I'm just getting to the point where I can pick them up, and they're doing awesome with it. I trained them to jump into my hand so I lift them up to the edge of the tank and give them a pumpkin seed so they all scramble to jump into my hand lol. Logan and Theo are the best about being picked up, Logan especially, which is funny because he was a bit of a nipper at first. Darwin loves climbing on me when I have them out in their play area but isn't thrilled about me coming and grabbing him yet. They all seem really interested in jumping out of the tank when I lift the lid so I think they'll figure out getting picked up gets them outside time and be less spooky about me grabbing them. They calm right down once I have them in my hand though.

It's been like 6 years since I last had gerbils and I've never felt quite complete without them, so I'm thrilled to have them back. It's my first trio and my first males, also my first rescue gerbils. The only difference I've noticed so far is that they seem to have a bit of a hierarchy and do little displays of status that I never saw in my pairs. But maybe I was too young to notice. It's interesting to watch. They are no harder to tame than my pet store gerbils adopted young have been as far as I can remember which is what I was worried about.

Without further ado, here are Darwin, Theo, and Logan! (gerbils are very hard to take pics of by the way)

Congrats! They are cute. My friend had gerbils when we were young that I loved to play with.
