They were originally bred in the 17th Century to hunt wild boar!

Most experts agree that the ancestors of the Great Dane came to Europe from Asia - but how is a mistery. Many believe that Phoenician traders first transported the breed to the Mediterranean region. Later these dogs might have traveled north to Germany with the Romans.

Crosses to hounds could account for the Dane's elegant build, unusual in the generally square-bodied mastiff breeds.

Except for its name, the Great Dane is 100% German. It was used at first as a war dog by Celtic and Germanic tribes, it eventually became known as a boar hunter and bodyguard.

This breed may be the closest living example of the ancient mastiff, or alaunt, if we take the evidence of Dane-like dogs depicted in 4000-year-old tomb paintings. Modern Danes are stellar guardians and friends.

Within that massive breast beats a gentle heart, and the Great Dane is a popular family pet (I just had to write that down because it's true )

Hope this helped a little.
